Office Depot has scored 100% in an audit which could switch us on to more opportunities in the utilities sector.
Inspectors from audit firm Achilles gave Office Depot a perfect score for all elements of safety, health, environment, quality and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) during a recent inspection of its management systems and operational processes in Leicester.
The results of the Office Depot audit will be published on an Achilles register which is used by customers in the utilities sector to find high performing partners.
The higher the audit score, the more chance an organisation has of being invited to tender for business.
Jacqueline Hills, Sr Director of Legal and Compliance, said: “The results of the audit are a fantastic endorsement of Office Depot and a testament to the incredible professionalism of our teams who work hard to ensure we meet the highest possible health, safety, welfare, quality, social and environmental standards.”
“This will strengthen our position and reputation with our existing utilities customers and potential new ones. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved.”
The auditor said he was “very impressed” with the professionalism of staff and the cleanliness of the warehouse. He had never been in a warehouse that stored and distributed as much volume as the Leicester DC.
Forty-five colleagues in the UK have been celebrated for completing training and apprenticeships following a significant investment by Office Depot.
Colleagues gained qualifications in leadership, management, sales and customer services after completing courses funded by the company's contribution to the UK Government's Apprenticeship Levy.
The levy has enabled Office Depot to offer up a greater range of training programmes to colleagues - which would not normally be available using operational budgets.
Louise Shields, Bids and Tenders Manager, completed her Chartered Management Institute Level 5 qualification in management.
She said: "I thought I was too old to do an apprenticeship, which is how this programme is funded. But I was inspired by my manager to do it and I think it is a great opportunity.”
"The qualification has really made me think how to lead using recognised techniques and skills rather than just going on your gut. It certainly makes me think about how I lead.“
"I would definitely advocate taking up these opportunities to learn. You're never too old and we have to keep on learning and growing.”
"It was also great for cross-team working as I got to work with people from different functions and from different sites."
Louise said people need to be prepared to balance work, home life and study. She added: "You have to make the time and be realistic about how you can do the work. But the end result is that it will definitely enhance your career."
Robert Baldrey, country manager for the UK&I, said: "Congratulations to everyone who has achieved a qualification. It's fantastic to see the company using our levy contribution in this way and I hope other teams and individuals will use this as an opportunity for personal development."
During the last few weeks Office Depot UK have successfully completed audits by both Achilles Building Confidence (pass) and Achilles UVDB Verify (100% score in all categories).
The audits provide independent assessment of an organization's approach to Safety, Health, Environment, Quality and Corporate Social Responsibility from the management system perspective to how processes and policies are applied. Details of the assessments are made available to buyers in the building and utilities industries and are therefore a key requirement to enable us to win and retain valuable customers.
A BIG well done to everyone who volunteered to take part in the Bradgate Park Team Challenge.
Thank you to Constantinos Marks, Brady Foster, Simon Clamp, Pat Harrup, Hilroy Benjamin, Neil Clarke, Faye Murray, Suzan Buffham, Rakhi Lakhani, and Amanda Barker who all took the time to volunteer to give back to the community by building tree frames at Bradgate Park for the day which will help protect the trees.
Office Depot has signed up to take part in two Leicestershire Cares social challenges during Cares Week on Tuesday the 15th of May – 12 noon-2.30pm and Friday the 18th of May – 9:30am-12 noon
Our associates volunteer 2.5 hours of their time to go and support the Musgrove Age UK group. The employee volunteers attend the lunch club and support service users with an afternoon in the garden planting flowers and brightening up the space. This task will encourage more residents to use and maintain the garden.
The Vista home provides specialist care for visually-impaired older people and those with dementia. Employee volunteers will get involved in arts and craft activities, puzzles and colouring with the residents. The team will be split into smaller groups and will rotate activities. The service users look forward to meeting new people and sharing their experiences.
Abdul Khamkar of Office Depot wins prestigious Young Executive of the Year award
The 17th European Office Products Awards (EOPA) were once again presented as part of OPI’s Partnership event – which brings together senior executives from Europe’s reseller and vendor communities from the business supplies industry for strategic meetings. Abdul Khamkar, EU Merchandising Manager – GOS & Mailing, was one of the winners, announced on 6 March during a special presentation dinner at the Hotel Okura in Amsterdam.
The EOPA 2018 presentation dinner, hosted by OPI CEO Steve Hilleard and OPI Director Janet Bell, was attended by industry leaders from across Europe. It was an enjoyable evening and a chance to celebrate some outstanding products, initiatives, companies and individuals from the business supplies industry.
Abdul Khamkar of Office Depot won the Young Executive of the Year award. This award is still relatively new and was introduced to recognise emerging young talent in our industry. And this year’s winner has plenty of that. To sum Abdul up in one key word, he is someone who simply “delivers” according to feedback the judges received. “This is a person who is expected to go a long way in our industry, having impressed already with his dedication and can-do attitude.”
Abdul says: “When my name was announced as the winner, it hit me by surprise as I didn’t expect it knowing the calibre of the competition. I am grateful to receive this award especially because I work with colleagues equally deserving this. I am even more grateful to have won this representing Office Depot.”
He adds: “Whilst awards are wonderful to receive, just knowing that I was selected by industry experts to receive this recognition is very humbling. This is the first award OPI have awarded to an employee from Office Depot in a long time, I’d like to think this is the start of many more to come and I’d like to thank Andrea Kenna, Director Merchandising Europe, for my nomination.”
Andrea Kenna, Director Merchandising Europe says: “Last year, I joined the OPI judging panel. This award was the perfect opportunity to nominate somebody from within Office Depot who matched the stringent criteria. Having worked with Abdul for many years, I knew he was the perfect candidate! On this award, I was not allowed to vote and after making my pitch why Abdul should win I had to leave the room while all the remaining judges debated each candidate. They took a long time! While I was confident that he could win, I did not know for sure until his name was called out on the night! I am very proud of Abdul, this level of recognition for his hard work is fantastic. It was great for Office Depot to be recognised on the night too and I will certainly be canvassing people within Office Depot to nominate our talent and initiatives for next year’s awards. We have a lot of great people and work to shout about...nominations normally start in October.”
The EOPA 2018 winners are:
Commenting on this year’s celebration, Hilleard, who is also the Chairman of the EOPA judging panel, said: “Once again, the judges were extremely impressed by the quality of the entries we received. Innovative products, inspiring campaigns and initiatives, and outstanding companies and individuals – that about sums it up. Selecting the shortlists was a challenge, choosing the winners even more so. All in all, this year’s EOPA are a great endorsement for an industry that is tackling head-on the many and varied challenges thrown at it.”

Office Depot and International Paper raise money for cancer research
In June and December last year, Office Depot partnered up with International Paper, one of our vendors, to raise money for breast cancer research. An impressive sum of €125,480 was raised.
Office Depot, represented by Alexander Steffl, Product Manager Paper Labels & Envelopes, was International Paper's first distributor to join the HP Paper's Pink Ream Sales campaign in June, via the Office Depot and Viking channels in Europe.
The Pink Ribbon campaign was initiated to gain awareness and to raise money for breast cancer research. A contribution of €0.10 from each HP Office Pink ream sale in Europe was donated to the Susan G. Komen Europe Network (www.komeneurope.eu) – a network of breast cancer organisations in Europe, committed to the fight against breast cancer. During this period, the response was overwhelming: over 1 million Pink Reams were sold via Office Depot and Viking channels, generating a total donation of €125,480.
International Paper and Office Depot would like to say thank you to everyone who contributed to making this Pink Ribbon campaign such a success. We can all feel very proud of the way in which we worked together to make a positive impact on women's health.
Alexander Steffl says: “Office Depot has been supporting the Pink Ream campaign in the US from the very beginning and we knew we wanted to be involved in Europe as well. This is not only a campaign that is wholly endorsed by our company, but it is also a topic that is close to the hearts of our customers”.
